Zoekjaar - A Year of Searching
Film FullHD | 01’25’ | 2021 | Production Country: Netherlands | Language: Chinese, English | Subtitles: English
This self-portrait documentary chronicles my personal journey during the "orientation year" (Zoekjaar) in the Netherlands—a period that grants non-EU graduates the opportunity to seek employment or establish their own ventures. Through this film, I share the struggles and dilemmas I encounter while navigating life in a foreign country, driven by the hope of securing a permanent residence. These challenges are further intensified by the distressing news of my mother's illness in China.
Carrying a self-made camera setup wherever I go, I channel my hardships into something meaningful through creativity and determination. Using film as my medium, I connect with peers in similar situations from diverse backgrounds. By interviewing and following them in their daily lives, I explore their unique stories, motivations, fears, and desires. Through this journey, I aim to show that isolation and insecurity can be overcome by recognizing that these struggles are shared by many.
This film project is supported by the AFK (Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst).

Screening
The film was completed and showcased during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands. Hosting screenings with audience engagement proved challenging; however, prior to the second lockdown, I was able to host three limited-capacity screenings in Amsterdam. These events provided valuable opportunities for meaningful dialogue with attendees interested in the 'orientation year' visa and the broader issues surrounding it.
