MOVE PART 1,2,3

The of video MOVE is divided into three primary parts, with its creative background rooted in my frequent relocations between cities throughout my life. Since childhood, I have often moved between two or three cities, driven by my own initiative and a desire to experience life with my heart, rather than for any specific purpose.

Through these various journeys, I realized that not everyone experiences travel in the same way. While some people tend to focus on their actions and destinations, others may overlook the emotions they experience along the way, unaware of the inner changes and memories activated during the journey.

In response to this, I explore and exhibit these emotional shifts caused by travel and movement through my montage experiment, presenting them from my unique perspective.

MOVE - Part 1

Video SD | 09’12” | 2011 | Production Country: Macao, China

In this section of MOVE, a person struggles with a heavy refrigerator in an alley. Their slow, laborious movement is portrayed through their crawl and the friction of their limbs against the ground. The external weight of the fridge, combined with the intensity of the performance, adds depth to my video work, prompting me to reconnect with my own bodily expressions and memories.

Various camera angles capture the movement, emphasizing the psychological pressure involved. A close-up of skin rubbing against glass underscores my feelings of depression, stagnation, and vulnerability.

When I cover my body with honey and perform actions like pulling and scratching, I create a personal challenge that accentuates the intense interplay between the physical and mental realms, as well as the struggle between the individual and their environment.

The performance evokes a profound blend of sensations, with honey representing a complex mixture of love’s difficulties and its unique sweetness. For me, honey symbolizes childhood and family memories, creating a nostalgic and tender atmosphere. Just as familial love can both comfort and constrain, honey embodies this duality, generating a sense of doubt. Through my performance, I illustrate how the feeling of being cherished within kinship can permeate one’s mind and forge memories that become deeply embedded.

This video section creatively and uniquely captures my childhood love for tug-of-war. Using two dolls, I effectively convey the essence of the game’s pulling, movement, and emotional shifts within a confined space.

I incorporate masks to focus the viewer’s attention solely on the dolls’ movements, while the white cloth wrapping the dolls illustrates the pulling dynamics. Multiple camera angles add depth to the visual experience, highlighting both the emotional expression and the scratches left on the dirt ground. The texture of the elastic fabric further enhances the visual and emotional impact of the movement, adding complexity to the piece.

This work reflects a longing for camaraderie, yet much of the play remains confined to my imagination due to the constraints imposed by the Chinese Single Child Policy.
