Experimental Video Screening Festival in Macao 2023
The EXiM – Experimental Video Festival in Macao, founded by Macau Ox Warehouse in 2011, is a Macau-rooted platform dedicated to promoting experimental video and video art in the Pearl River Delta. Since its inception, the festival has showcased over 260 works by more than 200 artists from Asia, Europe, and America. It continues to foster artistic exchange activities centered around experimental video, strengthening cross-cultural dialogue and creative innovation.
For EXiM 2023, the theme “Spotlight on Young Artists ” highlights emerging talents and students specializing in video creation. I was honored to be part of the festival’s curatorial team, working alongside six esteemed curators from different regions—Chen Yung-Hsien (Taipei), Chen Qiang (Chengdu), Phoebe Man (Hong Kong), Wenhua Shi (Boston), and Benny Shaffer—as we curated the screening sessions. Many of these curators are also educators in art and video creation, offering audiences valuable insights into the educational landscape of experimental moving images across various regions.
In the program “The Extension of Dreams,” I invited six Netherlands-based young artists present works that encompass a range of creative techniques, including scene creation filming, 3D computer animation, hand-drawn animation, and a fusion of 2D animation with image capture. Through their experimental videos, they employ non-linear narratives and image montage techniques to explore unusual landscapes that may exist between reality and dreams. In doing so, they construct intersections of space that weave together the past, present, and future of dreams.
Following each screening section, curators shared their insights on the selections and engaged in conversations with the artists and local audiences, fostering deeper discussions on experimental video art and its developing landscape.
