Experience Less Via More
-- A BRIEF DISCUSION AND THE
OBSERVATION OF
SCARCITY
In this essay, I explore how scarcity and abundance shape our perception of the world, particularly through the lens of food, climate change, and social systems. My journey begins in Amsterdam, where I experience the stark contrast between the city’s crisp, clean air and the dense, suffocating fog I knew
in my hometown. This contrast makes me reflect on how scarcity—whether of air, food, or other resources—shapes our awareness and the way we value what we have.
This reflection leads me to create Perfect Temptation, a film installation that examines food scarcity by documenting my field trips to Palestine and Cuba. In Palestine, I observe limited local food production, leading to heavy reliance on imported goods, as well as the limitation of agriculture, which is caused by Israel's illegal settlement, often with political and economic implications. The scarcity here is not just about the lack of food but about control—who has access to resources and decides their distribution.
In Cuba, I witnessed a different form of scarcity: a state-controlled food system where resources are carefully measured and distributed. Unlike the markets overflowing with excess that I am used to in other parts of the world, here, people navigate a life of careful calculation, where every portion is accounted for. Yet, despite these limitations, I see resilience and adaptation—ways in which people redefine abundance in the face of scarcity.
Through this project, I want to question how we think about scarcity—not simply as an absence, but as a condition that reveals deeper truths about power, resilience, and the ways we experience the world. In a time when overabundance often leads to detachment, I ask: Can relearning the abundance in life allow us to understand what it means to be less?
